Sweeping the World Champs

Before the series with the Cubs, I wasn’t sure what to expect.  We had won the series against the Cardinals in the games preceding, but we were facing the World Series champions.  We had won the game on Friday with Alex Wood on the mound, but these were the champion Cubs.  At least the Dodgers wouldn’t be swept!!

The game on Saturday was early, starting at 4:15, an unusual time.  It wasn’t too hot.  There was a mild breeze.  It was fantastic to see Justin on the field.  Notice the Memorial Day wear.  I love the look.
No one told me about these green camouflage hats…I wore my blue one.  Yikes!!
Say hi to our hard working servers from 3rd base club
And I have to show you the food in the baseline club
Brandon McCarthy who has been wonderful with a 5-1 record.
Meet Gary who has been a Dodger fan since childhood.
And how about a fan photographer who always asks if I want a picture.  This time I said no, I’ll take one of you,  He probably doesn’t have a nicer picture of himself.
Norma and Donna have their own personal photographer.
So do the twins Klayton and Duke.
It was truly a gorgeous, perfect-for-baseball day.  There wasn’t a cloud in the sky.
Chase seems to be giving advice to Kike who is listening intently
Chris Taylor…I really want to get his hat when they auction it off but he insists on hitting homeruns so they’ll probably jack up the starting price.
To everyone’s amazement Cody signed…but only one autograph.  It is a start.
National Anthem…Everyone checking out the pink haired lady singing.  I hope Kike isn’t getting any ideas
It is a nice pink
Some Corey photos.  I don’t want him to think I forgot about him.
Oops…don’t forget Brandon!!  Hey Brandon, I’m wearing your jersey!!!
It was a pitching duel between two exciting pitchers:  John Lackey and Brandon McCarthy.
There’s a lot of stuff going on before the first pitch…and then there it goes.
In the 1st inning, Kyle Schwarber walked but was left on base.

In the bottom of the 1st Corey walked but was left on base.
In the 2nd inning, Happ went to first after getting hit by a pitch.  Oops!!  He was left on base.

In the bottom of the 2nd, Kike went to 1st on a throwing error but was left on base.
In the top of the 3rd, the Cubs were out in order.  So were the Dodgers in the bottom of the 3rd.

In the top of the 4th inning, Happ singled after the play was challenged but was out on 2nd in the next play..

Then John Lackey came undone when Kike doubled and then stole 3rd base.Cody walked
Chase Utley singled scoring Cody.  1-0.
In the top of the 5th inning, Addison Russell hit a single to right field but was left on base.

In the bottom of the 5th inning, Brandon McCarthy walked.  Hmm lately a lot of walks are followed by a homerun.
And true to form, Chris Taylor slammed a 2 run homerun.  3-0.
Yasmani singled to center
Adrian singled to 3rd base.

Cody walked, Kike to 2nd.
Chase singled, Yasmani and  Kike scored.  5-0.
In the top of the 6th inning, the Cubs were out in order.  In the bottom of the 6th inning, Gutierrez walked but was left on base.

In the top of the 7th inning, Ross Stripling replaced Brandon.  Unfortunately Brandon complained of a pain in his right knee.  The Cubs were out in order.

In the bottom of the 7th inning, the Dodgers failed to score.

In the top of the 8th inning, Cubs were also unable to score.  In the bottom of the 8th inning Puig, Stripling and Taylor were all called out on strikes.

With Ross still pitching the Cubs were out in order…they had been blanked out with a score of 5-0.

We were hoping for a series sweep on Sunday.  It seemed inevitable with Clayton Kershaw pitching.  But he was facing Jon Lester.  We thought it would be a pitching duel and that it would be a short game.  Were we ever wrong!
The last game of the homestand and also the last game of the series with the Cubs was a Sunday day game.  It was supposed to be a mild mid 70’s day but it was sunny.  I didn’t anticipate staying in my seat long.  There were only a couple of Dodgers on the field. There was no early batting practice because it was a day game.  I went up to the club to eat.

The corned beef and potatoes were yummy as were the salads.
One of my favorite ushers Peter
Good luck to one of the servers/runner Jeannene who left for Miami right after the game for a brighter future,  We’ll miss you.

Clayton going down the field to stretch
Beautiful Memorial weekend sky…Clayton. Mild weather..what else could we ask for.
Jackson and family
Jackson’s Dad was wearing a jersey autographed by one of my very favorite players:  Matt Kemp.  I had to take a picture.
And how about two cuties:  Corey and Jackson

Notice Logan on the far left and all the positions he can get into.  I’m impressed!
Norma and Donna all decked out for the holiday.
Who would have thought with this first pitch that everything would fall apart for both pitchers:  Jon Lester and uncharacterically Clayton Kershaw who allowed 11 hits.  Clayton didn’t get a loss but an indecision since he was taken out of the game with 101 pitches before the 5th inning was over.
One of the highlights of the game was batgirl Alianna who caught a foul ball before it could injure a fan.  She was featured on the MLB highlights.  We have the best batgirls.
The 1st inning already spelled trouble for Clayton Kershaw.  Javier Baez singled to center.  Kris Bryant hit a single to left field.  They were left on base.  Close call.

In the bottom of the 1st inning,  Corey singled but was left on base.
In the top of the 2nd inning Yasiel replaced Gutierrez because of an unspecified illness.  Contreras hit a solo homerun 0-1

In the bottom of the 2nd inning, Kike walked.
Austin singled to right field, Kike to 2nd.
Cody Bellinger then hit a 3 run homerun to right center field scoring Kike and Austin 3-0.
In the top of the 3rd inning Rizzo singled, Contreras singled, Addison Russell walked but they were all left on base.

A little discussion with Honey about the pitching problem
Corey singled to center field.
Yasiel singled to left field.
Kike then hit a 3 run homerun to left center scoring Corey and Yasiel.  6-1.
The Cubs answered with a Rizzo 2 run homerun with Kris Bryant also scoring.  6-4.  Both pitchers were having problems serving up balls resulting in homeruns.

In the bottom of the 4th inning Clayton hit a single to left field.
Logan walked.
And that’s when the hook came for Jon Lester.  He was replaced by Mike Montrgomery.
After Montgomery warmed up, Clayton returned to 2nd base.  No score with Corey striking out and Chris out with a line drive to center.
In the top of the 5th inning,  Russell singled, Almora singled and then Clayton was taken out of the game.

Dodger fans cheered for Clayton when he left the game.  The Dodgers were still ahead.  Josh Fields replaced Clayton.  He struck out two Cubs to end the inning.
In the bottom of the 5th inning, Austin Barnes hit a solo homerun making the score 7-4.
The Dodger relievers did their job not allowing the Cubs to score.

In the bottom of the 7th inning, Chris Taylor singled.  Yasiel hit a 2 run homerun scoring Chris 9-4.  Could it get any better than this?

In the top of the 8th inning, Bryant walked but was left on base.  In the bottom of the 8th inning, Chase walked, Adrian singled but both were left on base.

The hot sun seemed to be getting to poor Yasiel.
Kenley came out to finish the game.  And the Dodgers win.
It was an exciting game with a huge sweep of the Cubs by the Dodgers.  They are off to St Louis to face the Cardinals during a day game on Memorial Day.
As if the day wasn’t exciting enough,  we went to a movie afterwards, the new Pirates of the Caribbean movie..in 3D.

OK then…we were all tired and a little silly.
Thanks for stopping by.   I can’t believe this blog took me 3 1/2 hours to write.  Hope you enjoy it.  Have a safe Memorial Day.  It’s back to work for me until the next homestand.  Bye everyone.  GO DODGERS!!!
