USC and the Pirates

Before I sat down to write this entry, I heard that Patrick Swayze had passed away yesterday.  He had a courageous fight with pancreatic cancer which began last year.  Unfortunately he had to wage his war against cancer in the media eye.  He stated that this month there was “reckless reporting” that stated that he was near death.  He called this “emotional cruelty when hope is so precious.”  Patrick, rest in peace.  Please pray for his family,

Last night was USC night.  There was a section of Dodger Stadium especially for USC people.  I wonder why it was in nosebleed section in upper deck.  I saw the entire band up there.  It must have been a feat hauling those tubas up there.

The Dodgers played the first of three games against the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Pirates090.jpg image by xoxrussell
The evening started out with dark clouds.  I was afraid it would rain
Pirates001.jpg image by xoxrussell

Our guys were out in the field intent on catching some batting practice balls.

Pirates002.jpg image by xoxrussell
That’s right guys, don’t stand too close to that back wall.  Clayton Kershaw separated his nonpitching right shoulder when he crashed into the left field pavilion wall trying to catch the ball.  He stated that he didn’t know the wall was that close.
Pirates008.jpg image by xoxrussell
The Pirates were standing awfully close to the offending wall.  Careful.
Pirates009.jpg image by xoxrussell
It was free Dodger Dog night.  Yaaay.  Tonight is free fleece blanket night.  Tomorrow is free Manny Bobblehead night.  What a week!
Pirates018.jpg image by xoxrussell
Our pitcher was Jon Garland, formerly of the D Backs.
Pirates016.jpg image by xoxrussell
He is still a new face to me.  He is very tall, at least 2 feet taller than I am.
Pirates117.jpg image by xoxrussell
Maybe he’s two feet taller than Russell Martin too
Pirates027.jpg image by xoxrussell
He warmed up his arm in the field before the game

Pirates040.jpg image by xoxrussell
Casey Blake our 3rd base was warming up
Pirates042.jpg image by xoxrussell
Another view of Casey

Andre always has a quiet moment before the game.
Pirates041.jpg image by xoxrussell
And then he signs a few autographs for some lucky fans
Pirates043.jpg image by xoxrussell
Matty getting ready to stretch.  Just checking to see if the coast is clear.
Pirates045.jpg image by xoxrussell
just keeping flexible
Pirates049.jpg image by xoxrussell
Uh oh, here they come again.  They aren’t watching where they are going.
Pirates051.jpg image by xoxrussell
oops, sorry Matt, didn’t see you.
Pirates052.jpg image by xoxrussell
Just kidding, let me help you up.
Pirates053.jpg image by xoxrussell
we’ll jus brush you off a little

Pirates057.jpg image by xoxrussell
Here comes Russell.  He has finally found his bat which seems to have been lost all season.   Great time to find it near the end of the season in time for playoffs.

A shot for Rosie
Pirates077.jpg image by xoxrussell
More of Russell in his usual position
Pirates079.jpg image by xoxrussell
A closeup of Russell
Pirates074.jpg image by xoxrussell
It was nice to see James Loney healthy after hurting his neck from a collision with the first base umpire’s belly on Sunday.  See, he’s not weariing a cervical collar.  James has not been on DL.
Pirates088.jpg image by xoxrussell
Russell and Jon walking to the dugout from the bullpen.  They don’t seem to be buddies yet.
Pirates089.jpg image by xoxrussell
It seemed they were never on the same page.  Jon had a rough outing with a few scares but righted the ship before it crashed.  The Pirates were only able to score 2 runs against him.  It was a bit disconcerting when his first pitch was hit putting the first at bat on first base.
I thought it would be a very long night.  I was right.  The game was 3 hours and 25 minutes.
Pirates064.jpg image by xoxrussell
Since it was USC night, the famous USC marching band was present.  It was kind of funny to see them on the field with our Dodgers while they warmed up.  The guys just went on their merry way acting like no one else was on the field.
Pirates062.jpg image by xoxrussell
This picture makes me laugh.  Look at the drum major in the background.
Pirates060.jpg image by xoxrussell
Everyone except Matt seemed to ignore the presence of the band.  He seemed to be part of the band.  Haha.  What a ham.
Pirates066.jpg image by xoxrussell
I love this picture of Russell and the band during the National Anthem.
Pirates082.jpg image by xoxrussell
Here’s the USC marching band standing in centerfield.
Pirates092.jpg image by xoxrussell
Here’s Matt signing an autograph for a lucky little boy
Pirates101.jpg image by xoxrussell
Garland was not at his best but he limited the Pirates to two runs.
Pirates105.jpg image by xoxrussell
The offense came alive
Pirates120.jpg image by xoxrussell
Raffy decided to wear his socks the Jim Thome way

Manny waving to a fan with his glove
Pirates100.jpg image by xoxrussell
Manny fixing his do rag
Pirates123.jpg image by xoxrussell
Orlando Hudson had a great game.  His bat came alive with 3 hits.
Pirates131.jpg image by xoxrussell
Man, I dropped my glove, how am I supposed to get that golden glove??
Pirates132.jpg image by xoxrussell
Matt made a huge catch at the back wall which knocked his cap off into the dirt.  Matt seemed to get dirtier as the night wore on.
Pirates143.jpg image by xoxrussell
Here he is a little dirtier laughing at something on the Kiss Cam on Dodger Vision
Pirates156.jpg image by xoxrussell
Here he is a little dirtier
Pirates172.jpg image by xoxrussell
Here is Kuo, one of our relief pitchers running to the mound from the bullpen.  He pitched a scoreless inning as did Sherrill and Broxton
Pirates182.jpg image by xoxrussell
James on base.  His bat also has come alive.  He has hit his 12 homeruns away from Dodger Stadium
Pirates186.jpg image by xoxrussell
Russell at bat
Pirates189.jpg image by xoxrussell
Russell on base.  He has a new confidence.
Pirates205.jpg image by xoxrussell
Broxton also seems to be better.  I don’t hold my breath and cover my eyes anymore when he closes.
The Dodgers won the first game against the Pirates 6-2 with a huge 2 run homerun by Andre Etheir, his 29th.  They have two more games with the Pirates, then will have a day off.  They will begin a series with the Giants on Friday.
I will close my entry with a few Andre pictures.
Pirates214.jpg image by xoxrussell
oooh, nailbiting time
Pirates216.jpg image by xoxrussell
I lost that penny somewhere around here
Pirates219.jpg image by xoxrussell
Back to my spot on the grass
Pirates218.jpg image by xoxrussell
This is what I do best besides hit homeruns
Pirates221.jpg image by xoxrussell
Are you still there, Matt, this game is really long
Pirates222.jpg image by xoxrussell
It’s lasted so long I need a haircut
Pirates224.jpg image by xoxrussell
Something bit me
Pirates227.jpg image by xoxrussell
Here too.
Pirates223.jpg image by xoxrussell
Another bubble
Pirates228.jpg image by xoxrussell
Oops, that bubble got on my nose
Pirates102.jpg image by xoxrussell
Oh, good, it’s over.  Let’s go home!!
Thanks for stopping by.  Have a great baseball day.

  1. Jane Heller

That was definitely a long game. (Aren’t NL games usually much shorter?) Glad Garland is working out for the Dodgers. He was such a nice pickup! Lucky you getting that fleece blanket. It’s starting to get cold at night (well, relatively speaking).

  2. southernbelle

Cat: I love you. I love your Andre pics, too. You should make like a story with them. Kind of like you had at the end. Just print them out, type up something, and sell it as a children’s book. “A Day in the Field With Andre Ethier.” Hahaha. I think we’ve got something there! I love the way Matty Kemp stretches. It’s funny.
I added a special cutie thing at the end of my latest post. I think you will appreciate it. 🙂

  3. thinkingblue

Wow CAT….lots of pixs. Thanks! Your comments under the pixs are hillarious… Garland two ft. taller than Martin..LOL and of course the ETHIER pixs all of them were funny. It must of been a great work out for the Dodgers…now what other team has a band playing while they work out…LOL! Thanks for sharing! And have fun at tonights game and enjoy the blanket!

  4. TribeTed

    great post. Love this!!

Long post, but great detail and great pictures.

    You should be a photographer!!

Haha it sure seems that Garland is 2 ft. taller than Martin.

    sorry I couldn’t get back,

school was taking up time. =)

    New post up,

and by the way, I am not a USC hater,

I am not an Ohio State U fan either.

I am a Cane for life!!

    Whoo Whoo.

    Ted’s Take

  5. JQuist

Rest in peace Patrick Swayze… I’m glad you took the time to acknowledge him. His long battle with cancer has come to an end, and we all know he’s in a better place now, free of any pain. He will certainly be missed… *Great pics by the way!

  6. southernbelle

Cat: If my cutie and hottie posts are your favorites, then I will have to keep them going, although all of the divisions are done. Maybe I can do my top favorite non Yankees as one. That’s a nice post. I’ll keep thinking of more cutie ideas. You are one of my best fans, and one of my best friends on this blog network. Of course I would do anything to make you happy 🙂
I think Thursday is an off day for my Yanks. Which means Friday there will be nothing to blog about….hm… Possibly a cutie post on Friday? Sounds good. I’ll try to do that 🙂
